Puzzled
Posted on Feb 28, 2011 | 1 commentEvery time I rose
from off my knees
and ventured East
You traveled West.
We sat together
and took a rest
shoulders pressed
to ward against
the chilling winds of change
I watched your graceful fingers fly
filling full the yawning spaces
of the crossword puzzle
held in both our hands.
And with excited eyes
You wove into a mesmerizing whole
the loosened ends.
But I didn’t understand the language.
It was somehow foreign,
when I tried to read.
And my heart was filled with sorrow
that I couldn’t be
that kindredness
you wished of me.
We say affectionate goodbyes
our yearning fingers slipping from
each others clasp
and turn to face again
the Maze..
You back to me is slipping
from my gaze…
and though the answers
I once knew,
have now forever gone
I believe the One in whom
we both confess
has love beyond this tangled mess
and so I stumble on.

I love this, Havilah! Such a good picture of the reluctant divergence of paths, and those last four lines are wonderfully encouraging words. Beautiful.
